Hyaluronic Acid

Water-binding sugar molecule found naturally in the skin. The foundation of modern fillers and skin boosters.

Also known as: HA, sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronan

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan the body makes itself. It is concentrated in skin, joints, and the vitreous humour of the eye, and binds up to a thousand times its own weight in water. That is why young skin is firm and resilient. By age 50 the skin holds roughly half the hyaluronic acid it had at 20.

How it works in treatment

Injectable hyaluronic acid comes in two forms. Filler is a cross-linked gel that holds volume in place. Skin booster is thinner and hydrates the tissue. How long the product lasts depends on cross-linking density: a light skin booster a few months, a structural filler in the cheekbone over a year. As the gel breaks down it converts to water and sugar.

Where it is used

Hyaluronic acid is used in lips, cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, jawline, and chin. Skin boosters such as Profhilo are placed more superficially to hydrate skin in the face, neck, and hands.

Results and safety

Results are visible immediately and settle over one to two weeks. Swelling and bruising are common and resolve within days. The major advantage over biostimulators: hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase if anything needs correction.

Common questions about Hyaluronic Acid

How long does hyaluronic acid filler last?
Cross-linked hyaluronic acid lasts from 6 months in lips and thin areas to 18 months in cheekbones and the jawline. Skin boosters such as Profhilo last around 6 months. Breakdown speed varies with metabolism, area, and product type.
Is hyaluronic acid safe?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most studied injectable substances in the world. It occurs naturally in the body, breaks down to water and sugar, and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed. The most common side effects are swelling and bruising that resolve within days.
What is the difference between filler and skin booster?
Filler is cross-linked hyaluronic acid that adds volume by filling out the tissue. Skin booster is thin, non–cross-linked hyaluronic acid that does not add volume but hydrates the skin and improves quality. Filler goes deep; skin booster sits more superficially.
Can hyaluronic acid be dissolved if I am unhappy with the result?
Yes. The enzyme hyaluronidase (Hylase) breaks down hyaluronic acid within 24 to 48 hours. This is one of the major advantages over biostimulators such as PLLA or CaHA, which cannot be dissolved.
