Glutathione

The body's most important antioxidant. Used for skin glow, pigment evening, and detoxification via vitamin drip.

Also known as: glutathione, GSH, L-glutathione

What is glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide built from three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamate. The body produces it in the liver and every cell contains GSH. It is our most important intracellular antioxidant and plays a role in detoxification, immune function, and pigment regulation.

How it works in treatment

Glutathione has three aesthetic actions. Antioxidant: neutralises free radicals that age skin. Tyrosinase inhibition: blocks the enzyme that produces melanin, giving lighter skin over time. Detoxification: supports the liver's breakdown of environmental toxins. The substance is given intravenously because oral absorption is poor — the stomach breaks down the tripeptide before it reaches the blood.

Where it is used

At Dibélle, glutathione features in selected vitamin drip protocols for skin glow, pigment evening, and general well-being. The treatment is most established in Asian aesthetic clinics. Standard is a course of 5-10 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart.

Results and safety

Skin glow is often noticed after the first treatment. Pigment evening requires several sessions and shows after 4-8 weeks. Glutathione has a good safety profile in intravenous form at clinical doses. High doses and incorrect administration have caused side effects in unregulated treatment settings — always choose an approved clinic.

Common questions about Glutathione

Does glutathione lighten the skin?
Glutathione inhibits the tyrosinase enzyme that produces melanin, which can give lighter skin tone over time. The effect is subtle, not dramatic. Glutathione is used mainly for skin glow and pigment evening, not for dramatic skin lightening.
Are tablets enough?
No. Oral glutathione is broken down in the stomach before reaching the blood. Only 1-2% is absorbed orally compared with 100% intravenous. Tablets do not produce the aesthetic effects.
How many glutathione drip injections are needed?
Standard is 5-10 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart, then maintenance once a month. Number of sessions depends on indication: skin glow needs fewer, pigment evening needs more.
Is glutathione safe?
At clinical doses through an approved clinic, yes. The main risk is poorly delivered treatments with wrong doses or breached sterility. High doses have been associated with kidney effects in unregulated studies.
