Microneedling

Creates controlled micro-channels in the skin to trigger collagen build-up and improve product uptake.

Also known as: microneedling, collagen induction therapy, CIT, Dermapen, Dermaroller

What is microneedling?

Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy (CIT) — was developed in its current form in the 1990s and has become one of the most used non-invasive techniques in aesthetic medicine. The needles are 0.25 to 3.0 millimetres depending on protocol. Pen-based devices (Dermapen) give more even results than roller-based ones (Dermaroller).

How the technique works

The micro-channels trigger three simultaneous processes. Inflammation: the skin's immediate response activates fibroblasts. Proliferation: new collagen and elastin are built over 4-6 weeks. Remodelling: old collagen is replaced by new over 3-6 months. At the same time, the channels function as transport routes for active substances — exosomes, PRP, hyaluronic acid, and peptides reach the dermis better.

Where it is used

At Dibélle, microneedling is delivered through Dermapen and Vivace (microneedling combined with RF). Indications: acne scars, fine lines, uneven skin tone, pores, stretch marks, and hair loss. The standard protocol is a course of 3-6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. Often combined with exosomes, PRP, or PRF for synergistic effect.

Results and safety

Results on skin quality show after 2-3 sessions; acne scars need 4-6 sessions with another 4-6 months of remodelling afterward. Downtime is 1-3 days of redness. Sun protection is mandatory for 1 week after. Microneedling is avoided in active acne in the treated area, active herpes, anticoagulant therapy, and keloid tendency.

Common questions about Microneedling

How does Dermapen differ from Dermaroller?
Dermapen is pen-based with vertical entry, giving more even depth and less tissue damage. Dermaroller is roller-based and can tear skin with poor technique. Dermapen is the modern clinical standard; Dermaroller is more often used in home care.
How long is microneedling downtime?
1-3 days of redness and mild swelling, similar to mild sunburn. Makeup is avoided the first day, sun for 1 week. Deeper protocols (1.5-3 mm) extend recovery to 4-7 days.
Can microneedling make scars worse?
With poor technique or in keloid-prone patients, yes. With a properly trained injector using correct depth and protocol, the result on acne scars is often dramatic. Active acne in the treated area is a contraindication because the needles can spread bacteria.
Is microneedling the same as Vivace?
Vivace combines microneedling with radio frequency (RF). The needles deliver RF energy in the dermis, giving stronger collagen effect than pure microneedling, but with longer downtime and higher cost. Both have their place — Dermapen for broader use, Vivace for more dramatic results.
