Radiesse in Helsingborg: the filler that also builds collagen

Most aesthetic treatments do one thing. Fillers add volume. Biostimulators stimulate collagen. But what if one single product does both, at the same time? That is exactly what Radiesse does, and it is what makes it so interesting.

Radiesse has been on the European market for over fifteen years, and it has always held a special position among fillers. It gives volume immediately at the time of treatment, just like a hyaluronic acid filler. But over the following weeks and months, something more happens: the product's microspheres set the body's own collagen production in motion. You get two effects in one treatment. That is unusual, and it is valuable.

At Dibélle in Helsingborg, we have worked with Radiesse since the clinic started, and it has become one of our most appreciated treatments. Especially among clients seeking contour, structure and a natural rejuvenation that lasts longer than traditional fillers.

In this guide, I go through everything you need to know about Radiesse: how it works, which areas it suits, what sets it apart from other fillers and what a treatment looks like with us. Want to prepare for your visit? Read our preparation guide for the best possible results.

What is Radiesse?

Radiesse is an injectable treatment containing calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) in the form of microscopically small spheres, suspended in a water-based carrier gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral that occurs naturally in skeletal bone tissue and teeth. This means the body recognises the substance and breaks it down naturally over time.

The product was developed by the German company Merz Aesthetics and has held CE marking in Europe since 2004. Globally, millions of treatments have been performed, and the safety profile is well documented in clinical studies.

CaHA microspheres: what makes Radiesse unique

The small CaHA spheres in Radiesse have a diameter of 25 to 45 micrometres. That is large enough not to be absorbed too quickly, but small enough to integrate smoothly into the tissue. Each sphere functions as a microscopic building block that fibroblasts, the skin's collagen-producing cells, gather around and use as a foundation for building new collagen.

The carrier gel provides the immediate volume. The CaHA spheres provide the long-term collagen stimulation. Together they create a result that develops and matures over several months after treatment.

Biocompatibility and breakdown

CaHA breaks down naturally in the body into calcium and phosphate ions, the same substances found in bone and teeth. This makes Radiesse one of the most biocompatible fillers available. No permanent substances are left behind in the tissue. The newly formed collagen, however, remains and provides a lasting improvement in skin quality.

How does Radiesse work?

Radiesse has what is sometimes called a dual mechanism of action. The term is technical, but the idea is easy to understand.

Phase 1: immediate volume

The very second Radiesse is injected under the skin, the carrier gel provides a directly visible lifting effect. You see the result already when you leave the clinic. This gel consists of water, glycerin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and it fills out just like a traditional filler does.

Over the first few weeks, the carrier gel is gradually absorbed by the body. But the volume does not disappear, because phase 2 has already begun.

Phase 2: collagen stimulation

The CaHA spheres remain in the tissue and function as a type of scaffolding. Fibroblasts in the skin migrate to the spheres and begin producing new type I and type III collagen around them. These are the same collagen types that give young skin its firmness and elasticity.

Think of it as planting seeds in a garden. The seeds (CaHA spheres) provide the structure. The soil (tissue) does the real work. And the result, new collagen, continues to provide effect even after the spheres have broken down.

Compared with other biostimulators

Radiesse is not the only product that stimulates collagen. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and is a pure biostimulator without filling effect. Profhilo works with highly concentrated hyaluronic acid to stimulate collagen and elastin. Both are excellent treatments that we offer at Dibélle.

What sets Radiesse apart is the combination: you get the immediate volume of a filler and the collagen stimulation of a biostimulator. For clients who want to see a clear result right away, and then experience how it only gets better with time, it is a powerful combination.

Radiesse vs hyaluronic acid fillers

This is one of the most common questions we get: "Why would I choose Radiesse instead of regular filler?" It is a good question. Both have their strengths, and the answer depends on what you want to achieve.

Duration

Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last 6 to 12 months, depending on product and treatment area. Radiesse generally lasts 12 to 18 months. The longer duration is partly because CaHA breaks down more slowly than hyaluronic acid, and partly because the newly formed collagen persists.

Dual action vs pure filling

HA fillers do one thing: they fill. They do it excellently, but they do not change the skin's fundamental quality. Radiesse fills and also sets collagen production in motion. Over time, the skin's firmness and texture improve, not just the volume.

Reversibility

Here, hyaluronic acid has a clear advantage. HA fillers can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase if the result is not as expected. Radiesse cannot be dissolved in the same way. This makes it extra important that the treatment is performed by an experienced injector. Read more about fillers in general in our fillers guide.

Application areas

HA fillers are more versatile, they can be used in lips, under the eyes, in the nose and essentially anywhere on the face. Radiesse has specific strengths in areas where structure and contour are needed, but should not be used in lips, under the eyes or in the nose. More on that in the next section.

Feel in the tissue

Radiesse gives a firmer, more structural feel than most HA fillers. This makes it ideal for defining the jawline and cheekbones, but less suitable for areas where softness is needed. If you want full, soft lips, HA fillers are the right choice. Take a look at our guide to lip augmentation.

Treatment areas

Radiesse is not an all-round product that suits everywhere. It has clear areas of strength and equally clear limitations. Knowing the difference is crucial for a good result.

Where Radiesse works excellently

Jawline: One of Radiesse's very best application areas. It provides definition and sharpness along the jawline, and the structural consistency means the result looks natural even during movement.

Cheekbones: Radiesse is perfect for building volume and contour in the cheekbone area. The calcium hydroxylapatite provides a stable foundation that does not migrate or spread.

Temples: Volume loss in the temples is one of the earliest signs of facial ageing. Radiesse fills out and gives a significantly fresher overall impression.

Nasolabial folds: The deep folds from nose to mouth respond well to Radiesse treatment. The immediate filling effect softens the folds, and the collagen stimulation provides a lasting result.

Chin: If you want a more defined chin profile, Radiesse can provide structure and projection without a surgical procedure.

Scars: Radiesse can be used to fill and soften deeper facial scars, including acne scars with volume deficit.

Hands: This deserves its own section, see below.

Where Radiesse should NOT be used

This is just as important to know as where it works:

Lips: Radiesse should never be injected into the lips. The product's consistency is too firm for lip tissue and the risk of lumps and irregularities is too high. Use HA fillers for lip augmentation.

Under the eyes (tear trough): The skin under the eyes is extremely thin and vessels lie close to the surface. Radiesse is too thick and opaque for this area and can cause visible irregularities. HA fillers with soft consistency are the right choice here.

Nose (non-surgical rhinoplasty): Radiesse should not be used in the nose due to the complex vascular supply and the risk of vascular occlusions.

How the treatment works at Dibélle

Consultation

All injection treatments at Dibélle begin with a consultation. We look at your facial proportions, discuss what you want to achieve and assess whether Radiesse is the right product for you. Sometimes we recommend a different treatment instead, or a combination. Honesty is more important than selling a specific product.

According to current regulations, a 48-hour reflection period applies for injection treatments. This means you book a consultation first, and the treatment is performed on a separate occasion at least 48 hours later. The same treatment type can then be repeated within six months without a new reflection period.

Preparation and marking

Treatment day begins with cleansing the skin. We apply a medical numbing cream that is left to work for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Radiesse also contains lidocaine in its formulation, which makes the injection itself comfortable.

I mark the injection points with a skin pen based on the plan we made during the consultation. This step is important. Just as an architect draws before building, I mark before I inject.

Injection

Radiesse is injected with a thin needle or cannula, depending on the treatment area. At Dibélle we use Radiesse 1.5 ml as the standard dose. Injection depth varies. For jawline and cheekbones, the product is placed deep, supraperiosteally (against the bone). For finer lines and more superficial indications, it is placed more shallowly.

The treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the number of areas. I massage the treatment area immediately after injection to distribute the product evenly.

Immediately after

You can see the result straight away in the mirror. Some swelling and redness is normal and may enhance the impression during the first few hours. I show you the result and explain what you can expect over the coming weeks. Then you can go home, most of our clients in Helsingborg return to their daily routine the same day.

Recovery and aftercare

Radiesse has minimal downtime compared to more invasive procedures. Most people can return to everyday activities the same day. But there are a few things to keep in mind during the first few days.

The first 24 hours: Swelling, redness and mild tenderness at the injection sites is normal. Some people get minor bruising. Avoid alcohol, intense exercise and heat treatments (sauna, tanning beds, hot baths).

Day 2 to 3: Swelling subsides noticeably. Any bruising begins to fade. You can normally apply makeup after 24 hours once the injection sites have settled.

Week 1: Most side effects have disappeared. What you see in the mirror now is close to the final result that Radiesse gives in its filling phase.

Week 4 to 12: Now the collagen stimulation starts to show visible results. The skin in the treatment area gradually becomes firmer and the result deepens.

Aftercare tips

  • Avoid massaging the treatment area yourself unless we have specifically asked you to (unlike Sculptra, which requires daily massage)
  • SPF 50+ daily for the first few weeks
  • Avoid intense exercise for the first 24 hours
  • Do not sleep on the treatment area the first night
  • Drink plenty of water, hydration supports collagen production
  • Avoid facial treatments and laser treatments for the first 2 weeks

Results and longevity

The beauty of Radiesse is that the result develops in two phases, and both phases contribute to the final appearance.

The immediate effect

You see volume and contour immediately after treatment. The jawline becomes more defined, cheekbones gain height, nasolabial folds soften. This effect comes from the carrier gel and is there already when you leave Dibélle.

The progressive improvement

Over the following 4 to 12 weeks, the body builds new collagen around the CaHA spheres. The skin in the treatment area gradually becomes firmer and smoother. Many clients report that they notice a continued improvement long after the initial swelling has subsided.

Longevity

Radiesse typically lasts 12 to 18 months, but individual variations exist. Factors that affect longevity include metabolism, treatment area, lifestyle and the skin's baseline condition.

The good thing is that even after the CaHA spheres have broken down, the newly formed collagen remains. Many people find that the skin looks better than before the treatment, even after the filling effect has faded. Maintenance treatments once a year help to build on the result.

Radiesse for hands

Hand rejuvenation is one of Radiesse's most unique application areas, and an area where few other products can compare. The hands often reveal age more than the face, yet they are one of the most neglected areas in aesthetic medicine.

Why the hands age visibly

Over time, the skin of the hands loses its subcutaneous fat, the fat layer that provides volume and softness. The result is that veins, tendons and skeletal structures become increasingly visible. The skin becomes thin, wrinkled and loses its youthful resilience. Sun damage, age spots and dehydration intensify the impression.

How Radiesse helps

Radiesse is FDA-approved for hand rejuvenation, one of few fillers with that specific indication. During treatment, the product is injected under the skin on the back of the hand and distributed evenly with massage. The result is immediate: veins and tendons are concealed, the skin looks smoother and younger, and volume is restored.

The collagen-stimulating effect is particularly valuable in the hands, where skin quality has often deteriorated significantly. New collagen improves the skin's texture and firmness gradually over the following months.

The treatment in practice

Hand rejuvenation with Radiesse takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. We apply numbing cream before treatment. Typically one syringe (1.5 ml) per hand is sufficient. Downtime is minimal, most people experience mild swelling for 1 to 2 days.

The result lasts 12 to 18 months, and the effect is often the treatment that delivers the most change per session of everything we offer. Clients who try hand rejuvenation for the first time tend to be genuinely surprised by the difference.

Who is Radiesse suitable for?

Radiesse is a good choice for you if you:

  • Are looking for contour and structure in the jawline, cheekbones or chin
  • Want a treatment with immediately visible results that also improve over time
  • Prefer a filler that lasts longer than regular HA fillers (12 to 18 months)
  • Are interested in hand rejuvenation and want to reduce visible veins and tendons
  • Want to stimulate collagen production while also gaining volume
  • Have nasolabial folds that you want to soften in a lasting way
  • Are 30+ and want to invest in a treatment with both short-term and long-term effect

Radiesse is not the right choice if you:

  • Want lip augmentation, use HA fillers instead
  • Need treatment under the eyes (tear trough), HA fillers with soft consistency are safer
  • Want a reversible treatment (Radiesse cannot be dissolved like HA)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active infection in the planned treatment area
  • Are under 18 years old

Frequently asked questions

Does Radiesse hurt?

With numbing cream and the lidocaine already present in the product, most people find the treatment comfortable. A stinging sensation during injection is normal, but the pain is brief. More sensitive areas like cheekbones may feel a bit more, but it is a matter of seconds.

Can Radiesse be dissolved like hyaluronic acid?

No, there is no enzyme that dissolves CaHA in the same way that hyaluronidase dissolves HA fillers. Radiesse breaks down naturally in the body over 12 to 18 months. Should you be unhappy with the result, treatment alternatives exist, but the process is slower than with HA correction. This makes it extra important that you choose an experienced practitioner.

How quickly will I see results?

You see volume and contour immediately after treatment. The immediate effect may even be slightly exaggerated due to swelling, but this settles within a few days. The real bonus comes over the following 4 to 12 weeks, when collagen stimulation provides a further improvement that builds progressively.

What risks are there with Radiesse?

The most common side effects are mild and transient: swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising at the injection sites. These typically resolve within a week. Less common side effects include nodules and asymmetry. Serious complications such as vascular occlusions are extremely rare but can occur with all injectable fillers. Choosing a licensed and experienced injector is the best way to minimise risk.

How does Radiesse differ from Sculptra?

Both stimulate collagen, but in entirely different ways. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and is a pure biostimulator without filling effect. This means Sculptra gives gradual results over weeks and months, but no immediate volume change. Radiesse gives volume right at the time of treatment and collagen stimulation as a bonus. Sculptra also requires daily massage for 5 days after treatment, while Radiesse does not require massage at all. The choice between them depends on what you prioritise: immediately visible results (Radiesse) or a more gradual rejuvenation (Sculptra).
